Halloween Safety Tips for Families

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year–costumes, candy, and community fun all rolled into one! But between the glow sticks and the goodies, it’s important to keep safety in mind so everyone ends the night with smiles (and plenty of treats).

Here are some fun and easy ways to enjoy a safe Halloween with your family.

Pick the Perfect Costume

Costumes are half the fun, but comfort and visibility matter too. Choose outfits that fit well to avoid tripping, and consider bright or reflective materials so drivers can see you after dark. If your costume involves makeup, test it on a small patch of skin ahead of time to avoid any spooky surprises.

Plan a Trick-or-Treat Route

Before heading out, decide where you’ll go and how long you’ll stay out. Stick to familiar neighborhoods with good lighting, and remind kids to always stay on the sidewalk and cross streets at crosswalks. If your town has designated trick-or-treat hours, plan around them to stay in the safest time window.

For little ones, make sure an adult stays close by. For older kids, set a curfew and have them check in throughout the night.

The best part of the night is emptying that candy bag–but take a quick moment to inspect everything before digging in. Toss out any candy that’s unwrapped, looks suspicious, or has been tampered with.
